Background
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that the UAE has launched a permanent endowment district worth Dh4.7 billion to expand global healthcare access. The large-scale initiative aims to fund long-term medical and educational programmes, with a focus on improving care for underserved populations.
At the centre of the project is a new hospital designed to treat up to 90,000 patients annually. The facility will offer advanced medical services and aims to reduce healthcare gaps in communities that struggle with limited access to quality treatment. The district will also establish a medical university, providing specialised training for the next generation of healthcare professionals. This will support global efforts to tackle shortages of doctors, nurses and technical staff.
Sheikh Mohammed described the endowment as a “perpetual charitable” initiative dedicated to strengthening health and education systems worldwide. He said the district was built to ensure continuous impact, with its proceeds reinvested into humanitarian and medical services.
The wider development includes schools for 5,000 students, housing for 2,000 families, and retail outlets owned by the endowment. Revenue generated from these assets will sustain health operations and expand support for social welfare programmes.
The UAE leader thanked donors and partners, including Azizi Developments, for helping bring the project to life. He stressed that every part of the district was designed to uphold the UAE’s commitment to giving and to strengthening global well-being.
The initiative continues the UAE’s broader healthcare plans, which include earlier community engagement and volunteering programs. Together, these efforts show the country’s long-term vision to make healthcare more inclusive, sustainable, and accessible worldwide.
