American Hospital Dubai performed a rare surgery, marking a milestone in treating complex conditions in the UAE. The hospital carried out a left hemimandibulectomy with mandibular condyle preservation to remove a rare jaw tumour, known as an odontogenic myxoma, on a female patient. The surgery is the first of its kind at the hospital and is offered by only a few medical centres in the region.
The patient, previously treated in the UK in 2000 for the tumour, was diagnosed with a recurrence during routine dental examinations. Detailed imaging, clinical evaluation, and biopsy at American Hospital Dubai confirmed a large tumour affecting the left mandible.
Dr Hani Nachawati, Consultant Oral Surgeon and Implantologist at the hospital, led the procedure. “The tumour was extensive, and careful planning was essential to remove it while preserving critical jaw function,” he said. Using advanced 3D CAD/CAM technology, Dr Nachawati created a precise surgical plan for both tumour removal and immediate jaw reconstruction.
The surgery involved removing part of the lower jaw and rebuilding it using a fibula flap, a procedure that restores both bone and facial shape. The surgery lasted 12 hours and was done by a skilled team, including Dr Roy, ENT surgeon, and Dr Tracia and Dr Ali, plastic surgeons, with help from the anaesthesia and ICU teams.
The hospital said the success shows its commitment to quality care.
