Background

The Blood Banks Friends Charity, widely known as Damy, marked World Blood Donor Day with a Kingdom-wide campaign centered on community awareness and voluntary giving.

The charity organised blood donation drives, complimentary health screenings and awareness activities at its centres across Saudi Arabia. Its flagship event was held at the organisation’s headquarters in Buraidah, bringing together community groups and partner organisations in support of the initiative.

Damy carried one message through the entire campaign: every unit of blood donated saves a life. The charity urged community members to give regularly rather than occasionally, pointing out that a steady supply is what keeps blood banks ready when patients need urgent help most.

World Blood Donor Day falls on June 14 each year. The World Health Assembly created the observance in 2005 to honor voluntary donors and draw attention to the millions of people worldwide who give blood without payment or condition.

The day also highlights the ongoing work needed to serve patients who depend on transfusions and to maintain a safe, sufficient blood supply across health systems.

Saudi Arabia’s participation this year reflects a wider push to make donation part of everyday community life, a shared responsibility that people take up by choice rather than in response to crisis alone.

Damy paired awareness activities with blood donation drives, giving residents an opportunity to learn about blood donation and participate at the same event.
