Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is now home to the region’s first hospital to have inserted an advanced heart monitoring sensor that is able to identify early signs of worsening heart conditions among people suffering from heart failure. The sensor makes it possible for doctors to monitor patients’ conditions from afar and administer medication while the condition is still manageable.
The device works via the use of a wireless sensor that is implanted in the pulmonary artery. The device continuously measures blood pressure and securely sends clinical data to the hospital’s care team. This enables doctors to identify early warning signs, make quicker treatment decisions and adjust medication without waiting for symptoms to worsen.
The hospital said the technology strengthens its remote patient monitoring services and supports a more personalised approach to heart failure care.
The implant is designed for patients with moderate to severe heart failure who are already receiving medical treatment and have been hospitalised at least once for the condition during the previous year. The first two patients to receive the device were Emirati nationals aged 62 and 79, both of whom had experienced repeated hospital admissions due to worsening heart failure.
The procedure takes one to two hours and is performed under local anaesthesia with mild sedation in the hospital’s cardiac catheterisation laboratory. Most patients recover quickly, with some returning home the same day and resuming normal activities within one or two days.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi said the introduction of the technology reflects its focus on preventive and patient-centred healthcare. The hospital continues to expand advanced cardiovascular services and strengthen access to innovative heart failure treatment across the UAE.
