Background-

Healthcare in the UAE is taking a new direction, one built around catching problems early rather than treating them after they appear. Hospitals and health authorities are turning to artificial intelligence, data analytics, genomics and precision medicine, paired with routine screenings and public awareness work, to flag risks well before they turn into serious illness.

Abu Dhabi’s Future Health initiative carries the 2026 theme “To Sense is to Predict” and centres on four areas, longevity and precision medicine, digital health and AI, resilience of health systems and investment in life sciences.

On the genomics side, Abu Dhabi’s newborn screening programme picks up more than 815 treatable genetic conditions soon after birth. A premarital screening programme also checks 570 genes tied to over 840 conditions and pharmacogenomic tools guide doctors toward medicines that suit each patient’s genetic profile.

The Behavioural Insights project pairs behavioural science with big data to look at why people make certain health choices. Right now, it centres on obesity, diabetes and heart disease, using smart notifications and tailored content to steer people toward healthier habits.

Hospitals across the country use AI to read mammogram scans, pick up early warning signs of sepsis, predict pregnancy complications and spot diabetes-related eye damage through retinal scans.

Emirates Health Services runs the Healthy Longevity initiative, which pulls together genomics, regenerative medicine and AI to assess health risks and biological age. The Itma’en programme tracks vital signs and builds personalised prevention plans for families.

Community awareness remains an important part of the UAE’s preventive healthcare strategy. More than 5,000 runners from 71 nationalities took part in Cancer Run 2026 in Abu Dhabi, setting a Guinness World Record and promoting early cancer screening, regular health checks and healthy living.
