Key Background
Eradah Mental Health Complex in Jeddah has made a new step in healthcare by introducing Raseen, a robot that helps people recover from addiction and teaches about mental health.
The name of the robot is derived from the Arabic word sobriety, which connotes the idea of life free of drugs and alcohol with balance in health, mind, society, and spirit. Raseen can speak to people and answer their questions, unlike service robots, which can only communicate with people. Dressed in traditional Saudi clothing, it guides both patients and the public with advice and educational information.
Raseen also employs high technology AI: Raseen visits the sessions to educate people about their mental health condition, and what causes them to resort to addiction. It also helps in group sessions, making it easier for patients to understand mental health issues and how to recover.
Dr. Khalid Al-Oufi, general supervisor at Eradah, said, “Raseen visits schools, universities, government offices, sports clubs, and public areas, where he listens to people’s mental health concerns and provides clear guidance.” The robot also takes part in conferences and awareness events, sharing information on early detection and support for mental health challenges.
Raseen also assists hospital staff by teaching them about workplace rules, professional responsibilities, and the Saudi health sector’s Vision 2030 plan. With Raseen, Eradah Mental Health Complex shows how technology can work alongside human care. The robot not only supports patients and staff but also spreads awareness and education about mental health in the wider community.
