Background

The Endowments and Minors’ Funds Authority, Awqaf Abu Dhabi, has begun deploying sustainable financing from the Life Endowment Campaign to support 140 of the most critical and vulnerable medical cases in the emirate.

The campaign, launched with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, raised more than Dh900 million from over 200,000 contributors. Officials said the move marks a shift from fundraising to real impact, as returns generated from endowment assets now fund urgent healthcare needs.

In the first phase, Awqaf Abu Dhabi will use the returns to help cover treatment costs for patients whose care cannot be delayed. The Department of Health identified the priority cases through a data-based process that allows hospitals to report patients who require urgent financial support.

The Life Endowment model turns charitable donations into long-term income streams. Instead of spending capital once, the assets are invested to generate continuous returns. These returns will support treatment for chronic diseases, life-saving medicines, and healthcare services for vulnerable groups such as People of Determination.

The newly formed Life Endowment Company manages the growth of the endowment assets and oversees how the funds are distributed. Governance rules ensure that all funding decisions follow clear medical and social impact criteria.

Fahad Abdulqader Al Qassim, Director General of Awqaf Abu Dhabi, said the release of the first returns shows how modern waqf can turn generosity into lasting value. He added that the aim is to create continuous resources that improve lives today and protect access to care for future generations.

The Department of Health said it uses a strict review process to ensure transparency and fairness when selecting patients.

PureHealth, which contributed Dh50 million at the campaign’s launch, is now sending volunteer doctors and medical teams to provide direct care to patients.

Launched under the slogan “With You For Life”, the campaign remains open for new donations as Abu Dhabi strengthens its model of sustainable, community-driven healthcare support.
