In an era where healthcare systems face mounting clinical, technological, and environmental challenges, Prof. Hanan Gewefel represents a new generation of medical leaders. Her work bridges diagnostic excellence, academic innovation, sustainability, and women-centered care—offering a blueprint for responsible healthcare transformation in the Middle East and beyond.

From early breast cancer detection to sustainable radiology and academic leadership, Prof. Gewefel’s journey reflects a lifelong commitment to impact, innovation, and women-centered care. A diagnostic radiologist, academic leader, and Founder & Chairman of the Women and Fetal Imaging Clinic (WAFI) in Cairo, she has built her career around a simple yet powerful principle: technology alone cannot save lives; access, awareness, and compassion do. Through her work at WAFI and as Acting Dean at Misr University for Science and Technology, she demonstrates how visionary leadership can transform healthcare.

Let’s explore how Prof. Gewefel combines clinical excellence, innovation, and women-centered care to transform healthcare leadership and sustainability!

Clinical Roots and a People-Centered Vision

For Prof. Gewefel, the practice of medical imaging has always been about more than technology, it is about people. Her journey began at Cairo University, where she earned her medical degree, followed by a Master’s degree and a Medical Doctorate in Diagnostic Radiology. Early encounters with breast cancer patients revealed a critical gap in early diagnosis, often stemming from limited access to specialized imaging and insufficient awareness. These formative experiences shaped her enduring focus on breast imaging, early detection, and systemic improvements in women’s healthcare. She credits Cairo Scan Radiology Center for nurturing much of her early clinical expertise, where she considered Prof. Hatem El Gabaly, prior Minister of Health in Egypt , and her mentor and supporter, at early phase of her career.

Over time, she pursued advanced training in breast imaging across Europe and the United States, earning certification and board recognition from the European Society of Breast Imaging. Yet her vision extended well beyond personal professional advancement. She sought to create a comprehensive care model that blends advanced technology, patient-centered practice, and community engagement.

WAFI: A Model for Women-Centered Care

In 2006, Prof. Gewefel founded the Women and Fetal Imaging Clinic (WAFI), a family-led healthcare enterprise designed to redefine women’s imaging care. The clinic offers specialized breast, fetal, and women’s imaging services while embedding early detection programs, free screening initiatives, and women awareness education into its operational framework. Under her leadership, WAFI has become a regional reference point, demonstrating how high-quality imaging and social responsibility can coexist.

As she notes, “Technology alone does not save lives—access, awareness, and compassion do.” This principle informs every initiative at WAFI, from screening campaigns to patient engagement strategies, reinforcing the idea that healthcare is most effective when it is human-centered.

The continuity of WAFI reflects not only an institutional vision, but a family legacy. Her youngest daughter, Dr. Sara Khodair, a graduate of Cairo University with a Master’s degree, joined the clinic in 2016, after completion of fellowship in radiology at University of Virginia (UoV), USA. Today, she leads its managerial operations, ensuring strategic growth, operational excellence, and the continuation of her mother’s founding vision.

Academic Leadership and Workforce Development

Parallel to her clinical achievements, Prof. Gewefel has invested heavily in academic development. Since 2011 she joined college of Applied Health Sciences at MUST University, then in 2020 she has served as Acting Dean at Misr University for Science and Technology, where she has championed applied education, curriculum modernization, and workforce readiness. Her approach ensures graduates are not only technically competent but also ethically grounded and prepared to assume leadership roles.

For her, clinical practice and academia are mutually reinforcing. Innovations and lessons from patient care inform teaching, while academic leadership allows her to shape a new generation of health professionals who prioritize quality, empathy, and social responsibility.

Sustainability in Radiology

Recognizing that radiology is among the most resource-intensive medical specialties, Prof. Gewefel has made environmental responsibility a central part of her work. She launched WAFI-GREEN, a pilot program focused on sustainable imaging practices. Awarded a €13,000 international sustainability grant from The European Society of Radiology (ESR) and European Institute for biomedical Imaging  Research (EIBIR), the initiative emphasizes energy efficiency, digital workflow optimization, responsible contrast media use, and ISO 14064-1–aligned carbon footprint reporting. Through this work, she demonstrates that sustainability and diagnostic excellence are not mutually exclusive.

“Sustainable healthcare is not a luxury; it is an ethical responsibility,” she asserts, underscoring her belief that every innovation must consider both patient outcomes and environmental impact.

Global Collaboration and Contextual Innovation

Prof. Gewefel’s work extends well beyond Egypt. Through long-standing consultancy with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),where she serves as an expert matter, contributing to capacity building, quality assurance, and radiation safety across the region. These engagements have reinforced her conviction that healthcare innovations must be scalable, contextually relevant, and inclusive, particularly in low- and middle-income settings.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is another area where she anticipates transformative impact. Yet she emphasizes that AI should support, not replace, clinical judgment. Responsible implementation, rigorous validation, and human oversight remain essential to maintain patient trust and diagnostic quality.

Leadership, Mentorship, and Women’s Empowerment

As a woman navigating leadership roles in traditionally male-dominated arenas, Prof. Gewefel has faced challenges that have shaped a distinctive leadership style rooted in resilience, empathy, and mentorship. Today, she actively supports emerging women professionals, inspiring them to pursue leadership with confidence.

She reflects, “Leadership is not about position—it is about impact ,responsibility,” a philosophy that permeates her work across clinical care, academia, and community outreach. Through mentorship programs and advocacy, she ensures that her impact extends far beyond her immediate professional environment.

This journey was not shaped in isolation. Dr. Gewefel was privileged to have strong family support, especially from her spouse, Prof. Fathy Khodair, whose professional insight, mentorship, and steady encouragement provided invaluable guidance at critical stages of her career.

A Vision in Action

From early breast cancer detection to sustainable radiology and academic stewardship, Prof. Gewefel exemplifies a holistic approach to healthcare leadership. Each initiative, whether clinical, academic, or environmental, reflects a commitment to ethical responsibility, innovation, and human-centered care. Through her work, she continues to demonstrate that true transformation in healthcare arises not only from technology but from compassion, education, and a deep understanding of patient and community needs.

Her journey underscores a broader truth: modern healthcare leadership is about vision, accountability, and the courage to act on both. One patient, one student, one initiative at a time, Prof. Gewefel is shaping a future where innovation, empathy, and responsibility coexist seamlessly.
