Background

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi met Thursday with Abdul Monem Hamid, head of the Union of Syrian Doctors and Pharmacists in France, to discuss strengthening scientific and medical cooperation and prepare for the signing of a joint agreement.

During the meeting at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, discussions focused on finalizing a cooperation agreement between the union and the ministry to support future joint projects, exchanges of medical and academic expertise, and remote lectures for medical residents in Syria.

Talks also covered support for Al-Mouwasat University Hospital through the establishment of a bone marrow transplant unit backed by the French government.

The two sides discussed preparations for a conference organized by the union with the Mihad organization in Deir Ezzor in October, along with a pulmonary diseases conference organized with the Syrian Pulmonology Association in Latakia that same month.

Al-Halabi praised the union’s activities and its support, emphasizing the importance of studying field medical campaigns, training medical residents and establishing a follow-up program with the union. He confirmed the ministry’s readiness to finalize the agreement in coordination with the Foreign Ministry for formal signing in the coming period.

The Union of Syrian Doctors and Pharmacists in France represents Syrian medical and pharmaceutical professionals living in France. Founded to represent Syrian expertise before French institutions, the union also supports Syria’s health sector through medical conferences and humanitarian missions.

The union played a role in organizing the first Euro-Arab Medical Conference in Damascus back in 2025, which brought in over 1,000 doctors. Al-Halabi and the union have met previously as well, agreeing to build a formal cooperation framework around medical education in Syria.
