Background
The UAE has launched a major global initiative aimed at expanding access to healthcare and education worldwide. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has announced a Dh4.7 billion permanent endowment district designed to offer long-term support for humanitarian and development projects.
Sheikh Mohammed made the announcement on his X account, stating that the district will serve as a “perpetual charitable endowment” whose proceeds will be directed toward global health and education programmes. He noted that the initiative is built to create continuous and sustainable impact in key sectors, especially healthcare and medical training.
The project will feature a new hospital that can treat 90,000 patients each year, with a focus on underserved communities. The district will also have a medical university that will train doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers to help reduce the global shortage of medical talent.
The endowment district will also form a wider community ecosystem, with schools for 5,000 students, housing for 2,000 families, and retail outlets owned by the endowment. Revenue from these facilities will be reinvested to support ongoing medical, educational and social services.
Sheikh Mohammed said the entire development “is designed to contribute to the continuity of giving,” combining infrastructure investment with long-term philanthropy. He also expressed gratitude to donors and partners, including Azizi Developments, for supporting the initiative.
The project strengthens the UAE’s broader strategy to improve global healthcare access and sustainable development. It follows earlier national efforts such as the Volunteering and Community Engagement Ecosystem and reflects Sheikh Mohammed’s vision of empowering communities through health, education and social welfare.
