Background
Wegovy (semaglutide), the oral version, has been approved by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) for long-term weight management among adults who are suffering from obesity and overweight due to their associated diseases in the United Arab Emirates. This is the second time that such an approval has been granted by any country in the world.
The GLP-1 receptor agonist drug, developed by Novo Nordisk, assists in reducing weight as well as maintaining it for long periods in patients who follow a restricted calorie intake and exercise regimen. Clinical studies also showed the treatment can lower the risk of major cardiovascular events in high-risk patients, including heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular death.
EDE Director General Dr Fatma Al Kaabi said the approval reinforces the establishment’s commitment to addressing obesity and overweight challenges, which are among the leading contributors to chronic diseases. She said that it is indicative of the UAE’s desire to create a flexible regulatory framework that will allow patients to have access to the latest developments in the field of medicines under high standards.
The decision was made based on scientific evidence indicating efficacy in weight reduction and reducing cardiovascular risk with a healthy lifestyle.
Venkat Kalyan, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Gulf, said the approval reflects a shared commitment between Novo Nordisk and the EDE to deliver trusted and innovative treatment solutions. He noted that semaglutide carries a well-established safety profile and that the once-daily oral format improves patient convenience and supports treatment adherence.
This approval also backs the UAE in its broader push to bring more attention to early obesity management and lessen the associated health complications.
