Background-

Syria and Germany’s KfW Development Bank are working to speed up joint health projects and strengthen financing as part of efforts to rebuild Syria’s health sector.

Health Minister Musab al-Ali met a KfW delegation led by Anna-Christine Janke at the ministry in Damascus on Monday. The talks covered financing plans and steps needed to move projects forward faster and improve healthcare services across the country.

Al-Ali said faster progress on these projects would support Syria’s recovery and help create favourable conditions for Syrians abroad to return home. He called for a lasting partnership with Germany built on shared expertise, pointing to German and Japanese post-war reconstruction models as examples for strengthening Syria’s health sector and building greater self-reliance.

Janke reaffirmed KfW’s commitment to the agreed projects and said the bank was ready to move quickly and work together on solutions.

KfW is a German government-owned development finance institution established in 1948. It funds sustainable development projects worldwide, including work in environmental protection, climate action and job creation.

In August, al-Ali also met Marcus Hicken, chargé d’affaires of the German Embassy in Damascus, to discuss growing Syrian-German cooperation in health and supporting long-term recovery.
